This was Tom’s first time in Europe, so I wanted to show him the very best of it. Since we share a passion for climbing, I built the whole itinerary around completing Königsjodler, the biggest, mightiest via ferrata of the Alps! Since it requires a full day (11-12 hours of hiking and climbing), we had to make arrangements wisely. Tom flew in to Budapest Sunday (with a couple of hours of delays), I showed him my favorite sunset viewing statue, the core of the downtown area, good food and some bars. He got a bike to explore the city on Monday while I was doing my entry exam (details will follow later), and he also got a chance to see our lab and present his work at a seminar. (Details will follow on SurgRob.)
Tuesday evening, we drove to Wiener Neustadt, walked around a little, but had to take a short sleep at least, since Wednesday began at 5am. I drove the guys (another Hungarian form the climbing gym joined us) to Hochkönig, just South of Salzburg. We were a little late, only beginning the hike at 10:30, but hope to catch up with speed hiking. Eventually the other guy did not take part for the via ferrata part, just the hike, but we did it with Tom all along. (We freed most of the first half.)
